The adverse effect of reality shows came into full light, when a participant Shinjini Sengupta became paralysed after suffering rebuke from judges in a dance reality show on a Bengali TV channel.
The same judges who raised the confidence level of the 16yr old participant to sky high levels based upon her performance in the first two rounds, ridiculed and critisized the girl so badly that she broke down on the sets.She later lost her speech and lost the movement of the limbs. The public humiliation upset the teenager so much that she could not recover from shock.
After the incident, the stress factor and cut-throat competitions in reality shows have come under the scanner. The incident exposes the ugly side of reality TV shows that exploit the emotional vulnerability of participants as well as viewers to raise their TRPs.
